Brief Description
A Health Academy is designed to prepare students for employment and post-secondary education in health related careers. It includes integrated classroom instruction, lab practice, clinical, and shadowing experience in selected health care settings. Academy students must complete a two or three-year program of study, including vocational and academic components. All academy students are required to complete a career exit point and participate in patient care/clinical requirements in 12th grade.

History of the DCHS Health Academy

Curriculum
Academic and Health Science Course will be integrated. Teachers work as a team so that academic teachers are teaching skills needed in Health Careers, and Health courses teach academic skills that relate to Health.

10th:     Health Science I
11th:     Health Science II
12th:     Allied Health III and Nursing Assistant III

Credit Requirements
Four English Credits            Three Social Studies Credits
Four Math Credits                 Three Science Credits

Dual Enrolment course can be taken at Florida Gateway College to supplement the curriculum to help reach these career opportunities.

 

Dress Code
In the Academy, students are expected to dress in a professional, tasteful manner. Because of our professional ties to the health industry, the school authorities will prohibit any type of make-up, hairstyle, hair color, jewelry, body piercing, visible tattoos or garments that detract from proper business and academic atmosphere.
Accordingly, seniors attending clinical will be expected to wear assigned scrub uniforms, including scrub top, scrub pants and white athletic or uniform shoes. Ponytails are acceptable only in the hair does not fall in front of the shoulder when the head is bent forward. Jewelry including items such as necklaces, bracelets, dangling earrings, or rings is strictly prohibited.

DCHS HOSA

Health Occupation Students of America is the student organization associated with health science. The organization gives students the ability to enhance leadership and networking skills while competing in various health related competitions.
